We met East Fife Reserves at Pittodrie in the 2nd round (2nd leg) of the League Cup. After trailing by two goals to nil from the 1st leg we made no mistake in beating them six nil winning on aggregate 6-2.
From the start the Fifers packed their defence and managed to hold out until ten minutes before the interval, when centre half Doug Rougvie taking a pass from Duncan Davidson, broke the deadlock, by hitting a good shot past the goalkeeper. Big Dougie played a big part in our second goal when after a run down the right wing, he crossed a great ball for Duncan Davidson to flick into the net at the rear post.
That goal put us on level terms overall, and with the brand of football we were playing it was no surprise after the interval, when Neil Simpson blasted home our third. Then Gordon Strachan netted our fourth from close range, followed by goals from Joe Smith (the best player on the field) and Doug Considine with a right foot shot completing our tally. This was our best display of the season. We were strengthened by the inclusion of first team pool members Davidson, Rougvie and Strachan, but our "own" boys who stood out were, Andy Dornan, Neil Simpson, Neil Cooper and Andy Watson (despite missing some scoring chances).
