High Speed Dons

We played Dundee United Reserves in a league game at Pittodrie last Saturday and had a resounding victory scoring five goals without reply. We got off to a flyer when Doug Considine blasted home a great shot after a corner from the right had been partially cleared. Neil Cooper got our second when he prodded the ball home in a goalmouth scramble. Alec McLeish got in on the scoring act, when, after a cute Neil Cooper lob from a free kick hit the bar, Alec cleverly headed over the keeper into the net. After a quick break from defence Andy Watson latched on to a Danny McGeough through ball to beat the Dundee keeper with a shot into the corner of the net, for our fourth goal before half time.
After the interval the pace of the game slackened, and we could only manage another goal scored by Danny McGeough after clever work by our substitute young Tommy Maguire. This was an excellent performance by a young team, one of the youngest ever fielded by Aberdeen. We had two players 21 years old, two 20 years old, one 19 years, one 18 years, four 17 years and three 16 year olds, which makes the average age 18.
Neil Simpson played a major part in our victory. Neil is only 16 but has a good physique and a good football brain, and seems set for a bright future. Andy Dornan continues where he left off last season, showing good form at right back. If the young players can keep this form up there is no reason why we cannot be amongst the honours again this season.
