First the match at Cowdenbeath and a big disappointment for the Dons who raced to a two-goal lead inside the first 10 minutes with goals from Ian Porteous and Steve Cowan. But an enthusiastic Cowdenbeath side fought their way back into the game and were level by the 55th minute and at the end of normal time the score was 2-2.
Cowdenbeath then score twice in extra time to make the tie safe and the only consolation for the Dons came in the performance of Joe Miller, Tommy McIntyre and Brian Grant. "It was a poor performance by us, particularly after the start we made." said coach Teddy Scott.
