Motherwell 2 - 0 Aberdeen

Motherwell ended their home fixtures at Fir Park, and secured a deserved win over Aberdeen. All through the Aberdeen forwards were disappointing, and never at any time looked like scoring. On the other hand, Motherwell were almost continuously pressing, and King brought off some marvellous saves. Still, it was only by means of penalty kicks - one in each portion of the game - that Motherwell secured the two goals scored in the match. On each occasion Gilchrist was the scorer. The strength of the Aberdeen team lay in the defence, and but for the excellent form there shown the score would certainly have been much higher. There was an all-round steadiness in the Fir park team which was absent from that of Aberdeen. Result:- Motherwell, two goals; Aberdeen, nothing.

Two penalty goals gave Motherwell victory over Aberdeen at Fir Park, but, although this was so, the victory was nonetheless well deserved. Only about 3000 spectators were present, and these were served with a keen 90 minutes' play. Motherwell were easily the nippier lot, and had it not been for the brilliance of King, the Aberdeen goalkeeper, the homesters goal total would have been much greater. Aberdeen's forwards never seemed to get going, and were easily dispossessed by the opposition, while the efforts that following up were weak. The home of van dominated the game, and it was a tribute to the Aberdeen defence but Motherwell only held a goal lead at the interval. The Fir Park defence started in rocky fashion, but taking their cue from the forwards, they played with great confidence later. The first goal came after Colman had attempted to rudely stopped Gilchrist's progress in the penalty area, King having no chance. Subsequently the Aberdeen goal had several narrow escapes, but Lennie had a few very good tries at the other end. Gilchrist was again brought down in the second half, this time by Davidson, and taking the spot kick himself he again gave King no chance. The Aberdeen goalkeeper in this period gave a display that bordered on the miraculous, and he defected many brilliant clearances, notably great drives by McNeil and McStey. Gilchrist had a run the whole length of the field, and after leaving the Aberdeen defence behind, he sent wide of the goal. Aberdeen showed a revival in the closing stages, but their efforts came too late to count. Lennie had a lovely header from a cross by Soye, but Hampton cleared in brilliant fashion. On play Motherwell thoroughly deserved their win. It was their best home display this season, and Aberdeen were fortunate to escape with such a comparatively small margin of defeat.
