For the first 45 minutes of their semi-final County Cup-tie with Aberdeen A at Pittodrie on Saturday Keith gave such a brilliant defensive display that they were only one goal in arrears at the interval. From then on, however, they faded almost completely out of the picture, with the result that the homesters piled on five goals in rapid succession to win easily by six goals to nil. Doolan the home centre, got his third "hat trick" of the season at Pittodrie.
Despite the runaway victory the game was always interesting, and the 6000 spectators who watched it took a keen delight in the bustling and robust manner in which the "provincials" bundled into the home attackers. Keith made the mistake of playing too close a game, but, even had they adopted a swinging style, the issue would never have been in doubt, so closely did the home halves keep a grip on the play.
Although Thom let six shots past him, the ex- Hawthorn keeper was in no way to blame for the heavy defeat. He took his team out of many tough corners, one of his saves from Doolan being of the miraculous order, and he got a well-merited ovation at the close. The visitors' backs were a stalwart pair, who never stood on ceremony, but went in to a tackle in fearless style. Brown, in particular, was a tower of strength, and although he gave away a penalty, redeemed his blunder by a sterling display. Gordon proved a capable pivot in defence, but was too overwhelmed with work to help his forwards much. Black was good at left half, but Gray, on the other wing, was weak, albeit there was some excuse for his failure as he was deputising for Murray, who had to lead the attack in the absence of 'Tom" Cowie, the regular centre. Of the forwards Murray was the most dangerous, and would have got the first goal of the match had not the upright been kind to Aberdeen. Whitecross was a fast and nippy winger, but did not get the ball too well or too often. The right-wing pair were weak, while MacBean was too often playing as a fourth half-back to be of much account.
Criticism of the home team would be invidious as all played well, although the forwards often lost chances by feckless finishing. Ross made an auspicious bow before the home crowd, being the best half afield, while Carrol, Doolan, and McLeod played a fine combined game in the second period, which brought Doolan three goals and Carrol two. The other point was cleverly notched by Love in the first half.
