Scottish Second XI Cup

07/02/1925 | KO: 15:00

No Goals At Pittodrie

The game at Pittodrie Park between Aberdeen A and Dundee A in the first round of the Scottish Second XI. Cup competition could not be described as brilliant. It was a hard rather than a good game, and there were many of the traditional cup-tie thills in the course of play. The teams did not do justice to themselves, and although individuals all worked hard, the efforts of both sets of players lacked cohesion.
A goalless draw rather flattered the Dundee reserve team. The homesters accounted for most of the pressure, but fortune frowned on the efforts of the Aberdeen forwards to score. When Bowie whipped round and drove hard for goal from thirty yards Marsh must have felt relieved to see the ball rebound into play from the upright. Then he had anxious moments at the opening of the second half. Bowie and Cosgrove again were thwarted in their efforts to establish the lead by the woodwork. It was anybody's game until the final whistle, and if Aberdeen were the most persistent attackers, Dundee were always dangerous in dashes for goal.
All the defenders were robust and vigorous in their tackling and kicking, but they neglected the forwards. Bowie was the outstanding player on the field. He was full of shots and dash from the start to the finish, and played typical cup-tie football. Nicolson the Dundee centre-forward, also played a good cup-tie game and was a continual source of annoyance to the defenders. While missing one of the best chances to win the match, Cosgrove played and struck a fine understanding with Main in the second half. The dapper outside right responded nobly, and his crosses were always dangerous. Forbes was a scheming forward, and shot well on occasions. Seven thousand spectators watched play under perfect weather conditions..
