Elgin City were outmatched at Pittodrie, where the Aberdeen reserve eleven defeated them in a Highland League game by three goals to nothing. About 3000 spectators witnessed a one-sided encounter, in which the one redeeming feature was the sturdy defence put up by the visitors.
Aberdeen pressed practically continuously throughout the first half, and it was more than their due when Forbes nodded home a centre from Grant. The Elgin forwards could do nothing against the rock-like Aberdeen defence and their inability to make progress was increased by the fact that their halves were far too busy in defence to engineer any attacks of any moment. Thanks to good luck and also to the sterling work of a very resolute and fearless set of defenders, Elgin were only one goal in arrears at half-time.
The same state of affairs continued in the second half, Aberdeen attacking but always countered by a stocky defence, until Grant again gave Forbes an opportunity, of which the centre was not slow in availing himself, a neat header giving Raitt no chance. Near the finish Forbes got the 'hat trick," a hard drive finding the net well out of Raitt's reach. Elgin had only one real breakaway, and Bremner spoiled it through over-eagerness, sending the ball weakly over from close in.
The feature of the second half was the fact that Aberdeen were awarded two penalties, off neither of which anything resulted. Raitt saved the first one from Grant, and D. Bruce made a complete mess of the second.
Raitt was the hero of the visiting side, and the home team was such a good combination that no outstanding individual can be selected for praise.
