Dashing Aberdeen Forwards

At Pittodrie on Saturday there was a fitting termination to an entertaining series of matches with various Scottish League teams, when, in a perfect afternoon before 12,000 spectators, Aberdeen defeated Third Lanark by 3 goals to 2.

There was no scoring in the first half, in which play for the greater part was a spirited duel between the Aberdeen forwards and the Third Lanark defence, interrupted occasionally by raids upon the home goal which, in a lesser degree than that of the visitors', was frequently in danger. On one occasion the Glasgow goalkeeper while out of his charge was dispossessed by Watson, but the ball went high over an empty goal. Allan failed to shoot straight after getting past the home backs, and following upon this, McRobbie and Brewster blocked hard drives that looked like counting. Cleverly led by Connon and Hutton, the home forwards made many promising incursions on Turnbull's charge, and the custodian saved brilliantly from Wylie, who on two occasions sent in terrific shots while on the run. Prone to leave his goal, Turnbull was lucky when a shot by Connon went narrowly wide with the charge untenanted. Near the interval, McGowan hit the upright with a terrific drive, but McRobbie, catching the rebound, cleared.

Quick Scoring

There was prolific scoring in the opening 5 minutes of the second period when, following upon a grand shot by Walker which Turnbull stopped, but failed to hold, Connon crashed the ball into the net. 2 minutes later, after clever combination with Connon, Hutton put Aberdeen further ahead. The Glasgow side retaliated strongly, and from a penalty kick given against Hannah, Orr scored for Third Lanark. In the period that followed, play ruled in favour of Aberdeen, and many shots just failed to take effect. Following upon a free kick near midfield, Allen equalised for Third Lanark. From then until the end a very fast pace was maintained, and after numerous efforts Connon put on the winning goal. In the closing stages, King saved a high ball from McConnachie, and then when it appeared he would be beaten, he effected a brilliant clearance after the ball had rebounded from the goalposts. Just before the final whistle blew, Connon and Wylie had shots that missed narrowly. The game was the best seen at Pittodrie this season, and the players did not spare themselves. Aberdeen fully merited their victory, but Third Lanark were plucky losers.
