Dons Ease Through at Elgin

Aberdeen eased their way back in to action with a comfortable win over League newcomers Elgin City at Borough Briggs. It was a stubborn effort from the home side in the first half that ensured the Dons did not have things all their own way, but superior fitness proved a telling factor as Aberdeen cruised to victory in the second half.
Darren Young took the opportunity to press for a regular starting slot in Ebbe Skovdahl's side when he flicked on an Eoin Jess corner after 38 minutes, to beat Elgin keeper Ivor Pirie. The Dons created numerous chances, but some poor finishing and bad luck restricted further scoring until Thomas Solberg added a second after 58 minutes following good leading up work by the impressive Eoin Jess. Five minutes later, Robbie Winters ran 60 yards to score the Dons third goal; his clever chip over Elgin keeper Pirie the pick of the bunch.
Derek Young came off the bench to score the fourth goal two minutes from time, deceiving two defenders before beating Pirie with a low 10-yard shot. Aberdeen were without several first team regulars as Arild Stavrum, Paul Bernard, Rachid Belabed and Russell Anderson were all nursing niggling injuries, while Hicham Zerouali was on international duty with Morocco.
