Dons back to winning ways

A strong Dons side turned in a much improved performance at Marks Park to get the better of the team that defeated what was in effect the Pittodrie second string at the weekend.

Good football was practically impossible on a pitch surface that left much to be desired although midway through the opening period, Stevie Crawford fired in an eighteen yard effort that crashed off the upright.

The only other clear cut opportunity before the interval came when a Jamie Smith cross from the right fell into the path of Steve Lovell, who had made a clever run to escape his marker. However, the ex-Dundee man's co-ordination failed to match the timing of his run and embarrassingly his wild swing connected with nothing other than fresh air. However, with seven minutes of the second half gone, the Englishman made up for his howler when he grabbed the game's only goal. Chris Clark, who had an impressive game, was the instigator with a run from the halfway line, before cutting inside to find Lovell.
From the edge of the box, the striker, who again had timed his run perfectly, sent a well placed angled drive into the corner of the net to put Aberdeen in front.

Ten minutes later, the Dons had a chance to double their advantage when a Barry Nicholson corner was met by the head of Russell Anderson. However, the Pittodrie skipper miscued his attempt and the ball spun harmlessly out for a goal kick.

Keeper Derek Soutar, who was rarely tested throughout the ninety minutes, looked assured when called upon and won the plaudits of his team-mates with some intelligent kicking, while Richard Foster also caught the eye with some fine runs.
