Young Dons open with big win.

Aberdeen U19s defeated their Rangers counterparts in an exciting opening game of the season. Irish striker Willie John Kiely was the hero as he scored two goals including a last minute winner. The young Dons had been two goals up at half time before Rangers pegged them back only to be denied by the late strike from Kiely.

The young Dons started brightly and opened the scoring after 33 minutes when Bruce controlled the ball on his chest and volleyed the ball past the keeper. Aberdeen then doubled their lead a minute before the interval when Bruce turned provider. He hit a superb 50-yard pass into the path of Kiely who finished well to put the Dons in a commanding lead.

Rangers pulled themselves back into the match seven minutes after the break when Crooke netted from a corner. Then with seven minutes remaining the visitors leveled with a great free kick from Gilmour. With only three minutes remaining Bagshaw released Maguire and his cross was met by Kiely who steered the ball past the keeper.

Neil Cooper was delighted with the start and told Redweb, "I'm really pleased with the result as this winning start will give them a huge confidence boost. Even though we were up 2-0 at the interval, I warned them that the game wasn?t won and that they shouldn?t let them back in. Unfortunately we did, but to be fair their lad scored a great goal to make it 2-2. At that stage you are always concerned how the boys are going to react after being pegged back so full credit to them for getting the winner.

"I thought we deserved to win as we had most of the possession, more of the pressure and were the better team. To be honest Greg in goals did not have a lot to do and to our credit we took the game to them and it was a real team effort today. Everyone did well and worked hard. This is a difficult start to the season as we have Hearts next so it was good to get the win today."
