Reserves break Hearts in Montrose

The Dons second string secured their first win of the campaign with a 2-1 over Hearts this evening. Aberdeen dominated the opening 45 minutes and raced to a two-goal lead with a double from John Stewart. Scott Muirhead was provider for both goals and had an impressive performance on the left side. He was substituted at the interval, no doubt with Saturday's SPL match in mind. The second half was more even with Hearts showing little for their increased pressure. They did pull one goal back in the 59th minute through Thorarinson but Considine and Donald were solid at the back as the Dons held on comfortably.

Aberdeen made a stunning start to tonight's reserve match against Hearts. With only 9 minutes on the clock John Stewart opened the scoring. Muirhead made a penetrating run down the left and found the young striker at the far post. Stewart rose and headed the ball across the face of the goal and into the far corner of the net. The same player then doubled the Dons advantage three minutes later when Muirhead again provided the cross. Craig had his initial shot blocked, but Stewart followed up to tap the ball into the net.

The Dons were now in complete control and Bagshaw was unlucky not to add to the scoring in the 15th minute when his fierce 25-yard drive was cleared off the line. A minute later Craig was upended inside the box, but the referee failed to award a spot kick. In the 19th minute Muirhead, who was having an impressive game, was brought down at the corner flag. He took the free kick and Bagshaw went close at the back post. Hearts finally managed a shot on goal a minute later when Thorarinson clipped the bar, but Langfield looked to have the effort covered.

Aberdeen should have added a third in the 28th minute when Stewart broke into the box, but had a double effort blocked. The ball then broke to Bagshaw and he delayed before Craig eventually hit a weak effort straight at the keeper. With three minutes remaining of the first half Craig went close again with some delightful play. He cut past two players on the left and shot inches wide.

Thomson replaced Muirhead at the interval and Hearts had more of the play without threatening too often. A Bagshaw mistake allowed Neil a shot at goal in the 48th minute and at the other end Considine headed a Foster cross wide in the 56th minute. Three minutes later Hearts pulled a goal back when Thorarinson fired in from an acute angle. Kiely replaced Bagshaw in the 65th minute and within two minutes he delivered a dangerous cross that was narrowly missed by Stewart.

Hearts started to increase the pressure, but Considine and Donald stood up well to the physical threat. At the other end Stewart had a chance to complete his hat trick but had his effort blocked and Kiely was inches from connecting with a Macaulay cross. For all their pressure in the second half, Hearts only came close to levelling in the 80th minute when Langfield turned a Neil shot over the top after the Hearts man found room on the edge of the box.
