Stavrum Header Sees Off Super Caley

Aberdeen reached the Quarter-final of the Scottish Cup, thanks to a 1-0 victory over Celtic's cup conquerers Inverness Caledonian Thistle. It was another impressive display from the highland side, and they put the Don's defence under immense pressure in the dying minutes as they fought for an equaliser.

There were few chances for either side in the first half, with the Dons having the bulk of the play, without making it count. Zerouali made an immediate impact in his return to first team action, his acrobatic overhead kick however, failed to trouble Caley keeper Jim Calder. Arild Stavrum came close on one occasion, and Jim Leighton denied Inverness the lead with a superb early save.

The visitors came more into the game in the second 45, and Leighton once again became the Dons hero with two more superb saves. In the 75th minute, Norwegian hot-shot ARILD STAVRUM grabbed his 8th goal of the season. Zerouali played Dow through on the wing, he crossed and Stavrum was there to power a header home to make it 1-0 to Aberdeen.

Moments later, Zerouali cleared a netbound shot off the line, showing that he also has defensive qualities. Russell Anderson came close to making it 2-0 but he was denied by Calder. Caley continued to pressure Jim Leighton, but the veteran keeper was on top form, saving brilliantly in the last minute, when a Caley effort looked to be heading for the top left hand corner of the net. The Dons held out for the victory, despite the valiant efforts of Thistle, and will now meet Dundee Utd in the quarter-final.
