Aberdeen cruised through to the semi-final of the Youth Cup this evening with a 4-1 win over Inverness. After a tight opening half The Dons scored early in the second period to lead 3-1. They never looked in any danger after this and a fourth from Duncan Jones sealed their passage.
After an even start The Dons almost went ahead in the 9th minute when Muirhead played a neat one-two with Buckley and attempted to chip the Smith from 10 yards out. The keeper made a terrific stop and steered the ball wide. The subsequent corner fell back to Muirhead and his cross come shot deceived Smith and crashed off the cross bar. In the 15th minute Foster beat the offside trap and collected a McCulloch cross, but with only Smith to beat the youngster fired wide of the target.
The game burst into life after the half-hour mark with either side exchanging goals. The Dons went ahead in the 32nd minute when Morrison burst free on the left and beat Smith in a chase for the ball and calmly steered it past the advancing keeper. They only held the lead for two minutes however as Gilfillan levelled with a screaming shot into the roof of the net from 18 yards.
Jones should have added another four minutes later after waltzing past four defenders. Unfortunately his finish did not match his build up play and he screwed his shot wide with only Smith to beat. The Dons did add a second in the 40th minute when good play released McCulloch on the right and Buckley back buried his cut from 12 yards.
The Dons extended their lead in the 54th minute when Morrison added his second after Buckley did the spadework. The youngster left Smith helpless as he drilled his shot home from the edge of the box. A fourth was added in the 69th minute following a well-rehearsed free kick. Carella ran over the ball then collected the ball as it was rolled into his path. He fired in his cross and Jones popped up to complete the execution and leave Aberdeen on easy street.
