Aberdeen 7 - 0 Airdrie

Aberdeen got a perfect start with a goal in the third minute, Munro heading in Jimmy Wilson's corner-kick. Within a minute it was 2-0 when Billy Little and Jim Whyte combined well to set up a scoring chance for Dave Johnston, the former Nairn County striker. This encouraging start put Aberdeen well on top, though Airdrie's Murray tried to stem the Dons' advances by setting up counter-attacks with some accurate long-range passing. Francis Munro was controlling the midfield with his strong, constructive play. Shots and headers continued to test the Airdrie keeper as Aberdeen's dominant midfield set up many chances. Smith and Harry Melrose in particular were squandering opportunities, while Johnston was unlucky on several occasions as he was foiled by excellent goalkeeping. Bobby Clark was a virtual spectator and saw Little and Wilson working a short corner for Jimmy (Jinky) Smith to score in 34 minutes. Just on half-time Dave Johnston finished some excellent outfield play with a raging shot into the net.

The second half continued with plenty of pressure towards Mckenzie, the Airdrie keeper. After 7 minutes he was badly out of position when Wilson headed home a Smith cross. Aberdeen were now coasting to victory but the crowd were not happy as the Dons seemed to ease off. Johnston was certainly the fans' favourite as he harried the Airdrie defence incessantly. It was one-way traffic and even Jens Petersen came forward for a rocket shot, which McKenzie saved well. In one isolated breakaway five of the Airdrie players were caught offside. In another raid Tommy McMillan slipped to let Phillips in but he shot over the bar. Eventually a sixth goal arrived 14 minutes from time, when Johnston completed a great hat-trick from Little's pass. Seven minutes from the end, Wilson made it the "Lucky 7" when he shot unexpectedly as the defence prepared for a cross. The final tally was seven but it could have been a cricket score.
