Aberdeen, who had just had their League Cup qualifying place snatched away from them at the last hurdle, got off to the worst possible start against a lively Saints outfit. Inside the first minute, Kerray waltzed past a static Dons rearguard to fire confidently past Clark. Minutes later only a fine block by Clark prevented Renton increasing the score. Gradually the Dons began to assert themselves as an attacking force and Ally Shewan, the Dons' skipper scored a fine opportunist goal to tie the scores in the 13th minute.
Danish import Jorgen Ravn was the Dons' danger man causing problems every time he was on the ball and McCarry was very fortunate not to fall foul of referee Foote for several illegal challenges on the Aberdeen forward.

Saints regained the lead right at the start of the second period when Kerray netted his second goal, although the striker looked yards offside when collecting a pass from Carlyle. The setback however made the Dons even more determined and after several encouraging moves they were rewarded when the day's top player, Ravn, deservedly equalised with 10 minutes remaining. The same player almost grabbed a dramatic winner but his net bound shot in the last minute was brilliantly pushed over the bar by McVittie.
