Dons Destroyed by Livi Goal Rush

This game left Ebbe Skovdhal with a lot to think about as his side were due to head for Livingston the following Saturday on the back of this heavy defeat. Trailing 4-0 at half time and looking a shadow of the team that beat Dundee, the Dons improved their attacking play in the second half, but still looked shaky at the back. There is no doubt that Livingston were a handy looking side, but the combination of everything going right for the visitors, and virtually nothing happening for the home side was enought to conjure up this freak result.

The first chance of the match fell to Aberdeen when Clark broke on the right in the 2nd minute. He cut the ball back to Zerouali, but the striker failed to connect properly. Two minutes later, Culkin was off his line sharply to deny the Moroccan. Livingston created their first chance in the 7th minute when a Stuart Lovell shot from the edge of the box was deflected for the first corner of the match. A mix up at the back put the visitors ahead in the 10th minute. A long through ball to Wilson was netted when Esson raced off his line to clear. He failed to get there in time when it looked as though McGuire had the situation under control.

Things got worse a minute later when Caputo doubled Livingston?s lead with another soft goal. The player worked his way into the box unchallenged and beat Esson at his near post leaving the Dons with a mountain to climb. The game was becoming a battle and referee Mitchell appeared reluctant to stamp his authority on the game letting some rather hefty challenges go unpunished. Livingston should have added a third in the 22nd minute when Quino found space inside the Aberdeen penalty area. The striker sent his effort high over the cross bar much to Esson?s relief.

Livingston went three ahead in the 28th minute when a Caputo shot was deflected off an Aberdeen defender and nestled in the back of the net. With that sort of luck, it was difficult to see how the Dons could get back into the match. Their luck totally ran out in the 31st minute when Barry Wilson headed in the fourth with the striker looking suspiciously offside. Caputo went close in the closing minutes, but drilled his effort wide. Zerouali had a shot at goal towards the end of the first half, but it was screwed well wide of the target. This was Aberdeen?s first shot at goal.

The Dons created the first chance of the second half when Thornley delivered a dangerous cross in the 46th minute. Livingston cleared their lines but Solberg did well to keep the ball in play and find Mackie. He in turn forced the first corner of the second half and from the set play there were loud appeals for a penalty as the ball appeared to hit an arm inside the Livingston penalty area. The Dons pressure paid off and they pulled back a goal in the 50th minute. Thornley worked his way along the edge of the 18 yard box and unleashed a shot which Culkin could only parry into the path of Darren Mackie and the youngster made no mistake with his finish.

The Dons should have scored again two minutes later when Zerouali worked his way down the left and set up McNaughton. The youngster hit the ball firmly enough, but Culkin made a brilliant stop. Seconds later, Zerouali had a chance to score, but hit his effort high over the cross bar. The Dons were to rue these misses as Livingston hit them with another two quick goals. Firstly Lovell hit an unstoppable drive beyond Esson in the 55th minute and three minutes later Caputo crossed for Bingham to net the sixth. This left the Dons with only pride to play for and the thought of how they should tackle the same side this Saturday.

Dadi and Tiernan replaced Zerouali and Thornley and the Dons went close again in the 73rd minute when Bisconti rolled a free kick into the path of Solberg. The Norwegian hit the ball cleanly but it sailed wide of the target. McAllister replaced Mackie in the 76th minute. With two minutes remaining, Darren Young forced a fine save from Culkin, but it was too little too late.
