With memories of the first team's 7-0 defeat at Celtic Park two days earlier still fresh in their minds, Aberdeen's Under 21 side had a psychological battle on their hands when they entertained their Celtic counterparts in a league fixture at Pittodrie.
They rose to the challenge magnificently, however, by recording a 2-1 victory, a result made all the more credit-worthy by the fact that they had to play all but a few minutes of the second half with only 10 men after Darren Mackie had been sent off for a second bookable offence. The young Dons showed their mettle early, taking the initiative with a goal seven minutes after the kick-off when Chris Clark's cross from the left paved the way for a scoring header by Kevin Rutkiewicz.
Continuing to dominate the play, the home side could have increased their lead on a couple of occasions before the interval, and their reaction to Mackie's dismissal was a second goal on the hour mark. Clark again provided the ammunition, his cross on this occasion being netted at the far post by David Lilley.
The young Celts' belated efforts to press home the numerical advantage they enjoyed eventually brought a goal in 72 minutes when Aberdeen trialist Juan Cobian conceded a penalty.
