Check For Young Dons

Share Two Goals and Points

Aberdeen "A" received a check to their run of home successes on Saturday, when they only managed to share the points with Motherwell "A" at Pittodrie Park in drawn game of one goal each.

The game was hard and keen, but devoid of the finer touches, and all over the result was a fair reflex of the run of play. The condition of the ground, owing to the frost, did not allow the players to take too many risks, otherwise play might have been of a faster nature. The home side have performed better before and were much below their usual form.
In goal Johnstone did all that was asked of him, but did not have a very busy afternoon. Urquhart was the better of two fair backs, but was rather injudicious at times.
The halves worked hard throughout, with Dunlop outstanding. The forward rank did not work well together until the second half, when the formation was altered, and had this been done sooner it might have brought success. Donald was the shining light all through, and was easily the best of the quintette. Smith at times gave glimpses of good form, but the others, although keen, did not show to the usual advantage.
On the visiting side, McClory in goal was safe, and had one particularly good save from Donald in the first half.
Rae was the better of two dogged backs, and in a strong half-line Pollock was a tower of strength, his breaking-up tactics upsetting the Young Dons' forwards.
In a go-ahead forward line Martin was always a danger on the extreme right, with McGillivray a good leader and Graham the best of the others.
The game in the first half was keen and even. Just on half-time Motherwell took the lead through Graham, following a raid on the right, and this they retained until the interval. The second period was again closely contested, and when it looked odds on the visitors taking both points, Newton smashed home a good equaliser following a free kick. The Young Dons fought hard for the winner after this, but failed to again penetrate the Motherwell defence.
