Dons slump to fourth SPL defeat in a row

The Dons were unable to reproduce their normal Sky Sports display as they lost out to an Amoruso strike. The game was marred by ugly scenes in the first half when Robbie Winters was hit by a coin while trying to take a corner in front of the visiting fans. Crowd trouble erupted after the incident and the game was held up for 16 minutes.

Although the Dons tried hard to level matters, they couldn't break down the Rangers defence and suffered their fourth SPL defeat in a row.

Rangers were first to show, but a long-range effort from Vidmar went harmlessly wide of Kjaer's goal with only a minute on the clock. In the 4th minute Darren Young was penalised for a foul on Ricksen. The full back swung in the free kick, but Kjaer easily held De Boer's header. Two minutes later Amoruso went close with a free kick 25 yards out as the Dons struggled to get a grip of the game. Caniggia had the ball in the net in the 8th minute, but he was clearly offside when the cross had been delivered. Aberdeen finally got their first effort on goal in the 9th minute as Mackie scooped the ball high over Klos's cross bar.

Aberdeen started to ease their way into the match with Dadi causing Amoruso problems at the back and a Winters overhead kick slipped inches wide of the post with 14 minutes on the clock. Two minutes later, Winters did well to turn Moore and set up Dadi. The big striker tried a shot from 18 yards, but his effort was blocked. Dadi was causing trouble again in the 22nd minute when he hit a wonderful half volley off a weak Amoruso clearance. Unfortunately the shot went straight at Klos and a minute later he was once again denied as Rangers scrambled the ball clear for a corner.

The game was then held up for 16 minutes amid ugly scenes as Winters was hit by a barrage of coins from the visitors end as he attempted to take the corner. A group of people from the home terraces then made their way along the track towards the visiting support and the referee removed the players from the field until order was restored. When the game did restart the corner came to nothing. The Dons seemed to settle more quickly after the restart and Winters went close on the half hour mark. A deep McAllister cross was knocked back to Winters, but his header went inches wide.

Rangers then took the lead in the 34th minute when Ferguson took a quick free kick to Amoruso. The Italian beat one player then hit a 30-yard shot into the roof of the net. The visitors almost doubled their lead in the 40th minute when De Boer swung in a dangerous cross that Caniggia and Flo both missed. Amoruso then collected the ball, but shot weakly past the post. The Dons had a great chance to pull level in the 44th minute when Dadi set Mackie free on the left. The youngster took the ball too wide and he ended up hitting the side netting from a tight angle.

Aberdeen started strongly and put Klos under severe pressure in the opening minutes when McNaughton, then Winters delivered telling crosses which Rangers scrambled clear. Dadi should have done better in the 50th minute when he headed a Winters' cross over the top when he really should have hit the target. Arveladze was causing the Dons problems and he won successive free kicks on the edge of the Aberdeen box which were comfortably dealt with. The striker went close however in the 56th minute when he collected a Ferguson free kick but sent it wide of the target.

The Dons were getting into the danger areas themselves, but couldn't find the killer final ball.
Darren Young then hit one of his trademark 20-yard drives on the hour mark and once more it flew harmlessly high. The players also appeared to be having difficulty with the under foot conditions. Tore Andre Flo became the first booking of the match in the 66th minute. The Dons were beginning to look dangerous and once more Dadi headed wide from a McNaughton cross. The visitors then went close in the 76th minute when McAllister cleared a De Boer header from the goal line following a Ricksen corner.

Thornley replaced Dadi in the 78th minute as the Dons tried to get in behind the Rangers back four. Four minutes later McGuire limped off to be replaced by Anderson. Clark replaced Mackie in the 85th minute as Skovdahl took the last roll of the dice. A minute later Darren Young was scythed down by Moore, but McCurry adjudged that no action should be taken against the Australian. The Dons failed to create any serious openings in the closing minutes and stumbled to their fourth SPL defeat in a row.
