Aberdeen 'A' Out Of The Hunt Now
The crowd was of First League dimensions when Aberdeen ?A? met Rangers ?A? at Pittodrie Park on Saturday, in what was virtually Aberdeen?s last chance of keeping in the running for the Alliance championship.
Rangers opened confidently, their close passing being pretty to watch, but Aberdeen were first to become dangerous, a great shot from Dickie being well saved by Dawson. The visitors attacked in turn, and after McHale had headed two dangerous crosses clear, Smith opened the scoring with a fast ground shot.
The Rangers' attack was always dangerous, however, and six minutes from the interval Smith scored a great goal with a first-time shot from McMillan's forward lob.
Aberdeen pressed on the resumption, but encountered a stubborn defence which gave away nothing more vital than a couple of fruitless flag kicks.
Fifteen minutes after the start Smith completed his hat-trick with a well-placed shot which followed a brilliant individual run. Rangers had much the better of the succeeding exchanges, but eventually Merrie took advantage of a slip by Simpson and beat Dawson with a good drive.
The Dons? defence could make little of Smith, who, after shooting against the crossbar from an acute angle, fastened on to a cross from Nicholson to score a fourth goal.
Aberdeen attacked strongly in the closing stages but were unable to pierce the opposing defence.
