Gilbert's opening goal against Celtic was his second from the left back berth in successive weeks as he had figured on the scoresheet in Aberdeen's 8-1 victory over Elgin City in a friendly at Boroughbriggs nine days earlier.

Thanks to the willing co-operation of former Don Ian Fleming, now managing Elgin, this game was arranged at short notice to take the place of a postponed league fixture against Hearts. It provided an ideal opportunity for Duncan Shearer and Brian Irvine to get back in action after injury and both players showed their appreciation by getting among the goals. Shearer celebrating the occasion with four counters which belied his lengthy lay-off.
Scott Thomson completed Aberdeen's tally with a two-goal contribution.
