Victoria United 2 - 0 Lochee United

HT Score: Victoria United 1 - 0 Lochee United

Northern League
Victoria United scorers: Ritchie (pen), Gardiner

29/04/1899 | KO:

Under very disagreeable weather conditions the Victoria United v. Lochee United met in a Northern League fixture at Victoria Bridge Grounds. During the day showers of rain and sleet fell with slight intermissions, and the ground at the commencement of the game was in a perfect puddle. As the colour of both clubs is blue, the Victoria United donned striped jerseys. There was a very meagre crowd of spectators present when the teams lined up as follows: Victoria United: Findlay; Kilgour, Thain; Dundas, Stronach, Craig; McHardy, Gardiner, Taylor, Watson, Ritchie.
Lochee United: Ross; Taylor, Hoban; Reid, Robertson, Macinally; McLaren, Macfarlane, Vigrow, Forrest, Haxton.
Referee: Mr John Thomson, Orion.

THE GAME,

The Victoria United won the toss, and the Lochee kicked off. Fifteen minutes from the start Ritchie scored from a penalty kick for the United, who had been having most of the play. This they continued to have during the remainder of the period, but there was no more scaring up to the time ends were changed.

Frequently during the second half the United came within an ace of scoring, and at length Gardiner, from a pass by McHardy, got a second point. The game ended in a win to the United by 2 goals to nil.

DUNDEE FOOTBALLER IN TROUBLE.

In Aberdeen Police Court yesterday - Baillie Taggart on the bench - Robert Ross, Ann Street, Dundee, pleaded guilty to having on Saturday, within the Victoria Bridge Football Grounds, Torry, Aberdeen, assaulted George Anderson, 11 years of age, son of John Anderson, hairdresser, Burnett's Close, Aberdeen, by kicking him and knocking him down. It appears that as the members of the Lochee team, who were defeated by 2 goals to 0, were leaving the field a number of boys ran after the accused, hooting him the while. The latter lost his temper, and is alleged to have turned round and chastised one of the boys. This action raised the ire of the crowd, and one of them, a young man, rushed up and expostulated. The Lochee player, however, at once attacked the young man, and struck out at him once or twice with his fists. An excited crowd began to collect, and the affair would probably have had serious consequences had not the police who were on the field put in an appearance, and dispersed the crowd. Ross was ordered to pay a fine of 15s, or suffer seven days' imprisonment.

These two teams wound up their League fixtures on Saturday. The ground in most places was more like miniature yacht ponds than a football field. The play calls for little comment, as owing to the state of the ground anything like class football was out of the question. In the first half the Vies did most of the pressing, but get the ball through they could not, and had not one of the Lochee kindly granted them a penalty kick, half-time would have been round with a clean sheet on both sides. Ritchie made no mistake with the kick, landing the ball beautifully in the net. Ritchie should give a few of his friends at Cattofield an object lesson or two on how to take a penalty kick. In the second half the Vics fairly hemmed in their opponents; but over eagerness prevented them from scoring, most of the shots going everywhere but through the goal. Taylor eventually managed to score, bringing his team out victors by 2-0. The game was a most unpleasant one. There was too much rough play for good football to be shown, and to this may be ascribed the low score.
