Aberdeen kicked off the match in glorious sunshine playing towards the RDS. The first minute saw a long ball played through to Caniggia. The Argentinian failed to get the ball under control and the danger was mopped up easily. Aberdeen went close in the fourth minute after Darren Young forced a corner. Winters swung in a dangerous cross that the Rangers defence failed to deal with. Mackie just failed to latch on to it at the far post.
The game erupted on the half hour mark when Konterman caught Young very late. Young played advantage and Winters worked his way into the box only to be denied as he was set to pull the trigger. Dons fans were incensed as Young took no action against Konterman when play stopped. Three minutes later Bisconti was booked for deliberate hand ball. From the free kick Rangers went close. After fine play by Caniggia, Nellinger shot from 15 yards only to see his effort blocked by the Dons defence.
Five minutes from half time, McGuire seemed to be harshly punished when he appeared to take the ball cleanly from Caniggia. The resultant free kick saw Latapy hit the ball well over the crossbar. Mols headed just wide in the 43rd minute and a minute later Aberdeen had claims for a penalty as Winters was eased off the ball in the Rangers penalty area.
The Dons tried to force their way back into the match as Mackie attempted to curl the ball into the top corner of the net. His effort from the edge of the box went well wide of the target though. Hughes replaced Numan in the 64th minute and two minutes later Preece made a point blank save at the feet of Caniggia. Rutkiewicz replaced Mackie in the 67th minute, but disaster was to follow as Rangers sealed the game. In the 69th minute Preece made another great save from Miller, but in the melee that followed, Bisconti was adjudged to have brought down Caniggia. Latapy made no mistake from the penalty spot. Worse was to follow three minutes later when Caniggia finished off a move created by Latapy and Miller. Belabed replaced Bisconti in the 73rd minute and seven minutes later McCann replaced Caniggia and Clark replaced Winters. Derek Young had an excellent chance to pull a goal back. He found himself in acres of space on the left hand side, but sent his effort high over the bar.
