Complexion Beauty in Spring
Avoid Heavy Foods, But Eat Plenty of Fresh Fruit

Just as the spring sunshine shows up the defects in the home and leads inevitably to spring cleaning, so should the defects spring shows in our complexion be remedied by careful cleansing and, if necessary, by dieting. After the rigours of winter the complexion is always in need of rejuvenation and thorough cleansing. Sometimes the skin looks muddy and clogged and seems to have lost all vitality. Most often this indicates a need for a tonic, as when the system is run down the fact is reflected in a sallow complexion, spots and other disfigurements. If you have reason to believe that you are rather run down, and that your spring complexion troubles are due to that fact get your doctor to prescribe a tonic. That will dispose of your difficulties in one way. It will then remain for you to give your complexion intelligent external treatment.

Value of Fresh Fruit Sometimes you can overcome spring complexion troubles by paying careful attention to your diet. Plenty of fresh fruit is excellent for the complexion. If it could be managed the very best spring breakfast one could have is composed of Grapefruit, Two fresh apples, American orange. The grapefruit is served in the ordinary way and the apples eaten raw afterwards. American orange is the name given to a sort of orange salad which is a favourite wish with those fruit-dieting enthusiasts, the Americans. It is made quite simply with orange and sugar. You cut the skin and all the white membrane of the orange with a very sharp knife. Next the quarters are carefully cut away from the intersecting pieces of skin, so that only the actual orange pulp is left. This is placed in a shallow dish, castor sugar sprinkled over, and left overnight for eating in the morning. Use one or more large seedless oranges. It is one of the most delicious dishes I know, and very astringent and beneficial to the complexion.

Avoid Heavy Foods For the cooked meals choose plenty of green stuff, and always eat as much fresh salad you can manage - especially watercress. Spinach and spring greens contain a great deal of iron and are very good to eat just now. Avoid all the richer, heavier kinds of dishes such as very highly flavoured foods, steamed and boiled puddings, rich cakes, too much meat, and pastries and chocolates. These should avoided in any case, on account of their fattening qualities, but especially on account of their disturbing effect on the skin. Excessive blackheads and pimples often owe their existence to the simple fact that the diet eaten is too rich, and consists of the wrong kind of food. In the springtime, when the bodily spring clean is essential, it is more important than ever to pay close attention to the matter of dietary. Face steaming is an excellent way of moving many of winter’s blemishes and of cleaning the skin thoroughly. It needs to be done intelligently and carefully to be successful. The flrst step is to massage good cold cream into the face and neck, following an upward movement from throat to brow. Be careful not to drag the skin anywhere, especially below the eyes. Leave this cold cream on for about five minutes, during which time you can be getting ready a bowl full of boiling water to which a few drops of Eau Cologne have been added. Now wipe all traces of the cream off the face with a soft piece of cloth, and wash the face with tepid water, drying it with another soft cloth.

Treatment For The Face Get a large turkish towel and, draping this over the head and shoulders to form a sort of tent, bend over the steaming bowl of hot water. Stay there as long as you comfortably can - for about five minutes at at least if you can manage it, taking care to see that the towel is so arranged as to keep all the steam inside the tent. The next step is to wipe the steam and perspiration (which should be flowing freely) from the face, which will probably be alarmingly red and heated looking. Then take a bowl of ice-cold water and splash this over the face and throat to close the pores and tighten the muscles of the face and neck which will have slightly relaxed in the process of steaming. Lastly, massage a skin food into the face and neck. If there is a tendency to wrinkles below the eyes put a little muscle oil into these across the lines, in addition to using the skin food.
